Music Lessons  and Coaching in Guitar, Vocals, and Songwriting -
Available Online and In Person In Ottawa, Ontario

“And when you say: ‘Give me also a share in these gifts which you have found so helpful,’ I reply that I am anxious to heap all these privileges upon you, and that I am glad to learn in order that I may teach. Nothing will ever please me, no matter how excellent or beneficial, if I must retain the knowledge of it to myself. And if wisdom were given me under the express condition that it must be kept hidden and not uttered, I should refuse it. No good thing is pleasant to possess, without friends to share it.” - Seneca, Letters from a Stoic 6.4

Hello and welcome!

I have been a musician for more than 20 years, and a teacher for more than a decade. In that time, I’ve discovered a lot about what it takes to learn music effectively. Music is without a doubt my life’s calling, and an essential part of this calling is sharing what I’ve learned with other musicians.

I offer lessons and coaching for guitarists, vocalists, and songwriters. My intention is to provide my students with the guidance, material, tools, strategies, understanding, and encouragement they need so they can make the music they most want to make.

Why Sign Up for Lessons or Coaching With Me?

Whether you are completely new to music, or already have some experience under your belt, you will benefit immensely from having the support of a music teacher. While it’s helpful to study with anyone who has sufficient experience, it’s ideal to find someone whose expertise and teaching style align with what you want to accomplish. Beyond the assistance you would expect to receive when taking lessons, every teacher also has something unique to offer—something only they can give.

My approach to teaching is holistic. This means I teach with the big picture in mind; helping my students to understand how all the musical pieces we explore fit together. Since music has many moving parts, and can often feel overwhelming, taking a holistic approach to learning allows us to simplify everything by identifying what’s essential. This saves valuable time and prevents confusion.

There are three main cornerstones unique to my teaching and coaching practice:

1) The “Three Areas of Musical Growth”

These three areas are proficiency, musicianship, and artistry. Everything I work on with students will fit into one of these three categories. This makes it clear in what ways the material we’re focusing on will support each student’s musical growth.

2) The “Three P’s of Musical Action”

I group all musical actions into one of three categories: practice, play, and projects. When I work with students, I ensure we take the time to work on all three, since they all have an essential role to play in becoming well-rounded and capable musicians.

3) “Building a Musical Life”

One of the most profound and game-changing realizations I’ve come to is that music is best considered alongside the other parts of our life. This is why I developed a concept and process I call “Building a Musical Life”. I use this in my own life, and with my students, to ensure a healthy, happy, sustainable relationship with music.

Lesson Information

  • Weekly lessons - $70 per hour

  • One-time lesson- $80 per hour

Lessons will make use of both the “Three Areas of Musical Growth” and the “Three P’s of Musical Action” as structures for learning, practicing, and making music. The specific material we work on—like exercises and songs—will be selected based on your musical taste, experience, and interests. You’ll be shown exactly what and how to practice to get where you want to go, and I will guide you on how to build strong musical habits so there will always be space in your day to put into practice what you’ve learned.

Lessons will work well for you if you want to know exactly what to do to make the music you want to make, and if you’re serious about doing what’s needed to get there. Regardless of your level of experience, if this sounds like you, then lessons will be a great fit.

Students taking weekly lessons will also have access to additional support, including custom practice material, email feedback throughout the week, and weekly office hours.

Coaching will be ideal for you if you want the benefit of lessons plus additional support in time management, building routines, clarifying what you want out of music, developing the right mindset, and learning strategies for taking musical action.
